DRIVER ALERT! Road Work in Yakima Could Impact Your Commute
If you drive Englewood Avenue in Yakima your commute could be impacted on Thursday. City of Yakima crews will be working on a section of Englewood Avenue on Thursday for an asphalt removal and replacement project. The work will close Englewood Avenue between 53rd Avenue and 56th Avenue from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm Thursday, April 28.
A detour will be in place on Thursday
If you drive Englewood a detour route will be in place during the closure. A news release says "because of heavy traffic volume, drivers can expect delays in the project area. Drivers should use alternate routes if possible until the work is completed. Drivers are reminded that the speed limit through all traffic-related work zones within the City of Yakima is 20 miles-per-hour."
Work continues on the Nelson Dam removal project
Crews also continue work on the Nelson Dam removal and replacement project that's resulting in a series of road closures.
Work scheduled to continue this includes pouring concrete for a new fish screen structure. The work requires temporary closure of South Naches Road at Powerhouse Road. This closure will start at 6:00 am and end by 5:00 pm on the following dates:
Wednesday, April 27th
Friday April 29th
Thursday, May 5th
City officials say the "Nelson Dam, on the Naches tributary of the Yakima River, was built in the 1920s to divert irrigation water for Yakima and the Naches-Cowiche Irrigation Association. The original design did not allow any fish passage. The dam has held back tons of sediment and silt over the years, raising the river bed and causing the Naches River to overflow its banks and pour into the surrounding community during even minor flooding. The Nelson Dam removal and replacement project will improve fish passage and sediment continuity to improve habitat, increase flow conveyance to decrease flooding risks for nearby landowners, and improve water supply reliability."
City officials say road crews get busy during the spring and summer so be prepared for more road work later this spring and summer.
