Temporary Block of Prop 12 Enforcement & Cattle Industry Conv.

**A judge is temporarily blocking enforcement of a new California law banning the sale of meat from pigs kept in spaces under 24 square feet.

Judge James Arguelles in Sacramento noted the California

Department of Food and Agriculture is more than two years late in finalizing Prop 12 regulations, the 2018 initiative setting minimum space requirements for pork producers.

Now, Arguelles says he’s granting a 180-day extension before grocers, restaurants and retailers are also subject to enforcement.

**During last week’s 2022 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show, the executive committee of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association approved the organization’s 2022 policy priorities.

The priorities include an emphasis on strengthening the economic, environmental and social sustainability of the cattle industry.

Also included is boosting the resiliency of the beef supply chain by addressing labor shortages, better processing capacity, expanding technology, strengthening transportation, and achieving key cattle industry priorities in the 2023 Farm Bill.

**Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack announced 12 members to serve on the inaugural Secretary’s Advisory Committee for Urban Agriculture.

The USDA committee will provide input on policy development and help identify barriers to urban agriculture.

The new committee is part of USDA’s efforts to support urban agriculture, creating a network for feedback.

Vilsack says, “I look forward to learning how we can better serve urban agricultural producers.”
