The council made it's decision after the Yakima Humane Society threatened to end its animal control contract with the city. Since the ban was lifted people have been able to adopt the dogs from the Yakima Humane Society and other local breeders.

A new study out of The Ohio State University College of Medicine and The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center that found that pit bulls and mixed breed dogs have the highest risk of biting and also cause the most damage per bite.

The Yakima City Council on Tuesday voted 5-2 in favor of an ordinance that repeals the city pit bull ban that's been in place for more than 30 years.

On the agenda is the council repeal of the city's pit bull ban. 30 plus years, hundreds of pit bulls confiscated or moved out of the city over that period of time, all in the name of a safer community.

Citing a "concern for higher adverse health risks", United will essentially ban from transportation the short-nosed and snub-nosed dogs as well as "strong-jawed" breeds including pit bulls and pit bull mixed dogs.

Coffey says city officials are currently working on enhancing the current dangerous dogs ordinance for council consideration on April 17.
