Two Washington Women Join the Army, Seek Combat Roles

MOUNT VERNON (AP) — Two Washington women are among the first to join the Army for combat jobs since the Army lifted gender restrictions for combat roles earlier this year.

The Skagit Valley Herald reports a 19-year-old from Sedro Woolley has enlisted as a cannon crew member.

Tianna Langdon said she plans to make a career out of the military and possibly attend Army Ranger School.

She says she didn't set out to be part of military history; she just wanted to make a difference.

McKenzie Griffin from Deer Park, in the Spokane area, has enlisted as a combat engineer. When she enlisted this past summer, she was the first woman from Washington to join the Army with the intention of filling a combat role.
