Innovation In Efficiency Could Help Feed The World’s Hungry
You could call this thinking “outside the lunch-box”. For a major food producing region like the Yakima Valley this just might make some sense. The United Nations estimates that the world wastes 1.76 billion tons of food each year, but there may be a way to cut down on some of that waste.
A group of international students pursuing their masters' degrees have created FoPo Food Powder. The company collects cheap and near-expired produce and spray dries it into a powder, which then extends the food's shelf life for two years.
The food innovation and product design students aren’t using a new product or new technology but are creating value out of the inefficiency of the food system
Business spokesmen say the expired fruits and vegetables turned to powder comes in three flavors: banana, raspberry and mango, and will retain about 30 to 80 percent of its original nutritional value.
Creators suggest it be sprinkled atop yogurt or ice cream, used in baking, or even blended into smoothies. (Mashable)
