It’s not enough to eat healthy and exercise. Researchers say getting enough sleep is also crucial to good health.

BBC News reports that the risk of developing heart disease goes up by as much as 48-percent if a person doesn’t get enough sleep. Researchers say most people need between six and eight hours of shut-eye to protect their health. Going without enough sleep for long periods of time increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Studies show people who sleep less than six hours per night face up to a 48-percent greater chance of developing or dying from heart disease and a 15-percent increased risk of developing or dying of a stroke.

Getting too much sleep is also bad for your health. Researchers say nine or more hours of sleep could signal an illness, including cardiovascular disease.
