How's your heart? February is heart health month in the state of Washington. And Yakima has a new heart center that opened on Monday.
Heart month was started in 2003 by the American Heart Association. The association says heart disease is the #1 killer across the country. Cardiovascular disease is the no. 1 killer of men and women in the united states. it includes heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure. 1,000 people die suddenly in American every day says Dennis Hoover the Director of Cardiac Services at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. The awareness campaign urges men and women to know their risk factors, and make changes for a heart-healthy life. Possible risk factors include: smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.  Hoover says women and men have similar risk factors, but one of the major differences recently found by the American Heart Association, is that women frequently have different underlying causes to heart attacks than men. But both will be treated in Yakima because Yakima is committed to saving lives through a new heart center that opened on Monday. Yakima Valley Memorial Heart & Vascular is located at 406 S. 30th Ave. A press release says "the center offers a full line of cardiac specialty care focused on preventing, diagnosing and treating heart-related diseases. It offers treatment for congestive heart failure, arrhythmia, pacemaker management, vascular services, interventional cardiology - and wellness care.
Major cardiovascular diseases - heart disease and stroke - are the leading cause of death in Yakima County."
