Low Cattle Numbers in April & WA FFA Student U.S. Presidential Scholar

**The latest Cattle on Feed report shows the U.S. herd dropped slightly in April.

Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.6 million head on May 1st, 1% lower than May 1 of last year.

Placements in feedlots during April totaled 1.66 million head, 6% below 2023.

Net placements were 1.6 million head**U.S. imports of poultry and other avian products from the Australian state of Victoria are banned in a bid to stop the spread of bird flu, according to the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

Processed avian products and byproducts from Victoria will need an import permit or government certificate from APHIS showing they’ve met the agency’s requirements.

Restrictions will be updated as more information becomes available.

**Seven FFA students have been named U.S. Presidential Scholars for their accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education.

Of the 3.7 million students expected to graduate from high school this year, more than 5,700 candidates qualified for the 2024 award, and 161 students received the honor.

The FFA members named as scholars are:

• Ezra Linnan of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, Sevastopol High School, Sevastopol FFA
• Landis Zebroski of Sheridan, Wyoming, Sheridan High School, John B. Kendrick Sheridan FFA
• Cy Pavlov of Trumbull, Connecticut, Trumbull High School, Trumbull Regional FFA

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was created in 1964 to recognize the nation’s most distinguished high school graduating seniors.
