New Wildfire Burning Near Cashmere
State, federal and local firefighters have attacking a new wildfire burning in a central Washington canyon north of Cashmere.
Central Washington Interagency Communications Center dispatcher Alisha Toombs said the fire in Hay Canyon had burned across 150 steep acres of grass, brush and light timber by late Wednesday night. She said it's about 25 percent contained.
Fire officials have said they're not aware of any threatened homes.
Four helicopters fought the fire until the sun went down. The spokeswoman says firefighters on the ground planned to work through the night.
Dispatch center spokesman Jim Duck said earlier that three 20-person fire crews and numerous engines from the state Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Forest Service and a local fire district responded after the fire broke out late Wednesday afternoon. No word yet on the cause.
