YAKIMA, WA – Central Washington Family Medicine Residency Program, a service of Community Health of Central Washington (CHCW), will be offering FREE sport physicals to 60-90 children at Washington Middle School on Wednesday, August 29th, from 3pm-5pm.  The residency program has been providing no cost sports screenings for any student at the school, especially the school’s at-risk population, for more than a decade.

“What began as a few physicals in July grew to encompass any pupil at Washington Middle School at the start of school that needed a sports physical to participate in after school activities,” says Russell Maier, MD, Program Director, Central Washington Family Medicine Residency Program.  “As Family Physicians we believe strongly in providing safe, healthy physical activity for these students.  Keeping kids busy with exercise is good for their minds and bodies.”

What: FREE Back-to-School Sports Physicals

When: Wednesday, August 29th, from 3pm-5pm

Where: Washington Middle School, 510 S. 9th Street, Yakima

Why: To encourage and provide students the means to making healthy lifestyle choices early

“This annual service offers our students a no-cost way to obtain the required sports physicals that has the potential to lead them to make healthy choices in the future,” says Sara Day, Assistant Principal, Washington Middle School.  “Thanks to the donated time and services of the physicians of CWFM Residency more than 1,000 students have received free physicals since they began serving our students in 2002.”

This year, 12 physicians from CWFM Residency will be providing the sports screenings and also will be offering students additional information on nutrition and maintaining active, healthy lifestyles.   These screenings are for Washington Middle School students only, although CWFM Residency provides low cost screenings throughout the year at their medical clinic.  For more information about sports screenings, please call (509) 452-4520 or visit us online at http://www.commhealthcw.org/yakima/index.html.
