The annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration March kicked off at Noon Monday which is a national holiday. That means all city, county, state and federal offices are closed along with banks and the post office.

ROLLING STREET CLOSURES MONDAY

If you're driving in Yakima you'll find some streets downtown closed for the march.
The march started at Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and North 5th Avenue. From there, it will proceed east on the boulevard to 8th Street. Those in the march will then head south on 8th Street to the Yakima Convention Center where a special program is planned.

HUNDREDS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND THE MARCH

Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard is closed from North 5th Avenue to North 8th Street during the march. Eighth Street is closed from Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard to Yakima Avenue.

CITY SERVICES CLOSED TODAY BUT NOT IF IT'S YOUR GARBAGE DAY

Yakima Transit will not provide bus service Monday, and the City’s Harman Center is also closed. City of Yakima garbage pick-up service will continue as scheduled Monday, but the Refuse Division’s office will be closed. There will be no delays next week for refuse collection. Lions Pool will remain open to the public.

 PROCLAIMING THE DAY

During a meeting on Tuesday, January 6th, the Yakima City Council proclaimed the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday to be a Day of Service in the city of Yakima.
