Yakima Police Investigate Death of 7-Month-Old in Neglected Home
Yakima Police are investigating the death of a 7-month-old child at a home described by police as a "collective reflection of neglect." Officers were called Tuesday to home in the 300 block of North 4th Avenue after getting a 911 call from a woman identified by a Yakima Police report as 20-year-old Kyleah Tolle.
OFFICERS FOUND A DEAD CHILD AND ANOTHER WHO WAS SEVERELY NEGLECTED
According to an according to a probable cause affidavit filed with the Yakima County Prosecutors Office when Officers arrived at about 7:25 am Tuesday they found a door unlocked and walked into the home to check on the family. They found a "severely malnourished" two-year-old girl in a crib and seven-month-old child dead in a nearby bassinet. Officers believe the seven-month-old child had been dead for some time given the condition of the body. An autopsy on Wednesday found the child died of severe dehydration. The two-year-old was taken to a Yakima hospital then transferred to Seattle for further treatment. Police believe the toddler was suffering from severe neglect.
THE TWO-YEAR-OLD WAS FOUND ALIVE IN A DIRTY CRIB
Police say the two-year-old was found in a crib full of stains next to an open window. Soiled diapers covered the floor and filled a trash can. Officers described the remainder of the home as unsafe and were "alarmed" at the neglect they found saying it appeared the home hadn't been cleaned in months.
OTHER PARTS OF THE HOME ALSO FOUND TO BE DIRTY AND NEGLECTED
The Officers found grimy floors full of dirt and "littered" with old food. They say the air was thick with an unpleasant smell that suggested neglect. The kitchen had dishes stacked on sticky uncleaned countertops.
THE 20-YEAR-OLD WOMAN FACES MULTIPLE CHARGES
Police say they arrested 20-year-old Kyleah Tolle, believed to be the mother of the children. She's now facing charges of two counts of First-Degree Criminal Mistreatment and 2 counts of Family Abandonment. She's being held in the Yakima County jail as the investigation continues today.
