In Yakima County, it is now illegal to camp or store supplies on county owned property including areas near the Naches River on the greenway. Today, the county commissioners enacted an ordinance to help stop homeless camps that pose safety and health risks. Commissioner Mike Leita says now Yakima County Sheriff's deputies have the ability to arrest those breaking the law. He says most of the time deputies will simply ask people to move on and suggest they stay in a local shelter.

County officials say there are plenty of shelters and lots of help for homeless in Yakima better alternatives to sleeping near the river on county property, something that is now illegal.
