VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say a woman was fatally shot by sheriff's deputies near Vancouver, Washington, after she attacked them with a hammer and a knife.

The Clark County Sheriff's Office says the incident began Sunday afternoon, when a motorist driving erratically crashed her car and walked away yelling. About 20 minutes later, a homeowner a few blocks from the crash scene reported that a woman was trying to force her way into the house.

Responding deputies found the woman in someone else's backyard, leading to the fatal confrontation.

The sheriff's office has yet to release the name of the woman or the deputies, or say how say many shots were fired.

The deputies were not hurt.

The Vancouver Police Major Crimes Unit is handling the investigation.
