It is no secret that since Donald Trump retook office in January 2025, immigration enforcement and deportations have surged! While you have not been hearing about mass deportations in the news lately, this is because the administration has ceased its widely publicized raids due to intense and extreme blowback from some groups.

However, immigration enforcement has only increased. Official data shows that between March 11th, 2026, and August 5th, 2026, ICE arrested 2,500 people in Washington. This is a 31% increase from the 1,900 arrested over the previous 5 months. 20% of all civil immigration arrests occur in Washington State!
Yakima has the highest per capita enforcement rate in the entire state! Yakima County sees 17% of all arrests, with Yakima alone seeing 15% of all arrests, the largest of any city in Washington! The Migration Policy Institute estimates undocumented immigrants make up about 9% of Yakima’s population. Yakima also is a hub for immigration enforcement due to ICE using Yakima Air Terminal for deportation flights.

The immigration crackdowns have seen sharp division in political opinion between Republicans and Democrats. Opponents argue it hurts local businesses, separates families, and is a dangerous exercise of federal power, while proponents argue it enforces existing law, deters more illegal immigration, and preserves American cultural heritage.

If Republicans win the House of Representatives, current levels of arrests will be preserved or increased. If Democrats win the House of Representatives, the president’s agenda will likely be blocked and slowed. It’s up to the voters!
