October is definitely one of my favorite months. The weather, the coming holidays, and the harvest all combine to make it a special time of year.

Just a few random thoughts about October in the Yakima Valley.

The weather works like the month of March, only in reverse. It comes in like a lamb, and goes out like a lion. Beautiful, sunny, temperate days and cool, crisp nights at the beginning of the month turning to kids trick or treating in parkas on Halloween.

The holidays are on the way. In October we have Columbus Day and Halloween. Halloween is the big one to celebrate, especially at my house. October also means it's time to plan for Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving and, dare I say it, Christmas. My daughter, Autumn, also turns 18 this month as well.

The harvest is such a great time. Straddle carriers and trucks are hauling bins of apples all over town, mint fields in the lower valley are especially fragrant, and the pungent smell of hops is everywhere.

This is such a great time of year. High school football on Friday nights. Transitioning away from summer grilling to crock-pot comfort foods. Spending more time indoors with the family. The World Series and Seahawks' football on TV.  Spiking apple cider with a little Fireball cinnamon whiskey while getting together with friends.

I have feeling that this is going to be great month!
