The Salvation Army surprised a community member at an annual luncheon Wednesday with a major award.

Dale Carpenter received the "OTHERS" Award for his service to the community.

It is the highest honor awarded by the Salvation Army.

Carpenter has volunteered with many different organizations across Yakima, including Camp Prime Time, Multiple Sclerosis, and the Muscular Dystrophy association.

He also served on the Salvation Army Board.

"Stunned today, shocked beyond... This is the first time this has ever happened, where I did not know it was coming," Carpenter said.

Carpenter encouraged the audience to share more of their time as volunteers and to reach out to others.
