Experts Warn Safe Storage Devices May Delay Access in Emergencies
A new report highlights that only about half of gun owners store their firearms securely with devices like trigger locks or lockboxes, according to the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions.
SOME LOVE THE DEVICES OTHERS NOT SO MUCH
Experts emphasize that using these safety devices can significantly reduce injuries, homicides, suicides, and mass shootings.
However, officials warn that in high-stress situations, the devices may not provide quick access when needed. Trigger locks and certain lockboxes can be slow to open or difficult to install, potentially delaying access during emergencies.

GUN GROUPS OPPOSE THE LAWS
Gun rights organizations, including Gun Owners of America (GOA), oppose mandatory safe storage laws. GOA officials argue that while these devices are useful for long-term storage, they are not suitable for self-defense, as they may hinder immediate access to firearms.
DID YOU RECEIVE A RENEWAL NOTICE?
Meanwhile, local authorities remind gun owners to renew their concealed pistol licenses. The Yakima County Sheriff's Office says that those with a green renewal card from the Washington State Department of Licensing can now complete the process online.
TWO WEBSITES WITH ALL THE INFORMATION
Yakima city residents can visit the city’s website for renewals, late renewals, or replacements at Yakima Permit Website.
Those living outside city limits can also renew online through the Yakima County Sheriff's Office website. For residents in other cities, visiting local police departments or city halls is recommended.
Officials stress the importance of always carrying your concealed pistol license if you are a permit holder, as it is required by law.
