
East Selah Households Asked to Replace PFAS Filter Cartridges Every Six Months
The Yakima Health District is urging residents of East Selah who received PFAS water filters to stay vigilant with ongoing maintenance and proper disposal practices.

The initiative by the health district aims to safeguard drinking water, soil, and groundwater from potential contamination.
Since early 2023, the Yakima Health District has supplied pitcher and under-the-sink PFAS water filters to homes in the East Selah area.

HARMFUL PFAS FOUND IN PRIVATE WELLS
The filters were provided in response to detections of PFAS in private wells. Health officials say while the filters are an effective tool in reducing exposure to PFAS, maintaining them correctly is essential for optimal performance.
“Used filter cartridges can contain PFAS, so proper disposal is an important part of reducing PFAS exposure and protecting the environment.

Health officials urge homeowners to take advantage of the free disposal option and continue regular filter maintenance,” says Shawn Magee, Environmental Health Director at Yakima Health District. He says to make sure the filters continue to function effectively homeowners should replace filter cartridges every six months or as recommended by the system manufacturer. It is also important to watch for indicator lights or alerts signaling that a replacement is needed.
