Thursday is National Peace Officer Memorial Day, a day set aside to honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty in the U.S. every 57 hours.

The Yakima Police Department will mark the event beginning at 11 a.m.

“It takes a special calling to choose this particular profession," says Yakima's Capt. Rod Light, "but in the end it’s worth it knowing you’re helping your community.”

Last year 105 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty including one in Washington.

President John F. Kennedy first set aside Peace Officers Memorial Day in 1962.
