Any  good trekked can tell you that it was the Romulus who invented cloaking technology in 2152,and that the Klingons got it 16 years later.  So much for Sci-Fi but what about real life?

New research suggests that the device may be available to the rest of us soon than later. Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory report that they successfully tested an ultra-thin cloak made of microscopic rectangular gold blocks that mimic skin, conforming to the shape of objects and rerouting light waves from its surface to make it invisible to the naked eye.

Yahoo News is reporting on researchers who say the cloak is probably five to 10 years away from practical use. (Yahoo)
