Yakima Police shot a 30-year-old man at a Yakima home Tuesday night after he fired shots at officers. Police were called to the 800 block of South 4th Avenue at about 6:20 p.m. while searching for a shooting suspect. When they arrived they found 30-year-old Gabriel Zavala. Police say he immediately opened fire on an officer and fled in a vehicle while shooting at another officer responding to the area.
Hours later Tuesday night he was eventually found barricaded in an outbuilding in the on South 12th Avenue. SWAT officers were called and after several hours of trying to talk to the suspect they used a chemical to force him out of the building where he confronted officers with a gun and was shot. Zavala is being treated at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. t
Two Yakima officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues.
