Last Thursday Yakima County Department of Corrections officers found Inmate Jeffrey Pickens unresponsive in his cell with his uniform tied around his neck. Pickens was housed in a cell by himself. Officers say they last had contact with Pickens within thirty minutes before he was found.
He died at a Yakima hospital on Sunday. the 40-year-old Pickens was being held on a first-degree murder charge after killing his 74-year-old mother in June.
Pickens was arrested after police arrived at the 18th Avenue apartment June 28 and saw him running from the area. Officers say when they arrived they heard 10 to 15 shots. After arresting Pickens they found his 74-year-old mother dead in the apartment. Police say numerous shots were fired at his mother and inside the apartment.
