Oh, Cornhole… the breakfast of champions! Oh wait, that’s corn flakes, or is that Wheaties? I can never remember. I know one sounds dirty, and the other makes you dirty when you pour the milk after you put the cereal in the bowl. One also tastes better than the other. Unless you’re experiencing the sweet taste of victory! I also know one of those things is better when drinking. Then again, I’ve never really had corn flakes with beer. But now I have a new thing to add to my bucket list.

I’ve often felt the game of Cornhole was created because two people had too much to drink while playing horseshoes. Or worse, lawn darts. Someone got a concussion, and a new game was born. I do think of how amusing it might have been to see people playing horseshoes with helmets or lawn darts with chainmail armor, but no, let’s just make a little bean bag to toss. Sometimes if you go to a riot, the police will shoot you with those beanbag guns, or as I call it, “Extreme Cornhole.”

How Is Cornhole Played?

According to Wikipedia, the game can be simple or as complicated as you want. In general, you have two boards, each 2 by 4 feet, with a 6-inch diameter hole on one side of each board, roughly 9 inches from the top. The boards sit at an angle (12 inches from the ground at the top and 3 to 4 inches from the ground at the bottom) and are placed anywhere from 27 to 33 feet away from each other. This can change depending on spacing and the abilities of the players. Speaking of players, the game can be played one on one or by teams. The purpose is to toss your bean bags (6 x 6 inches) at the other team’s board. There are foul lines that can be drawn or imagined, depending on how hardcore you corn!

Scoring In Cornhole!

The game is set up into innings. Each player (or team) takes turns throwing the beanbag. If you hit the board and get it to stay, you get a single point. If you get the bean bag in the hole, that’s 3 points. If it’s half on the board, half off, the “dirt bag” is 0 points. In league play, cancellation scoring is used. An example of this is if team A scores 8 points, but team B scores 6 points, then team A wins the inning by 2 points (8-6). The innings go on until a team reaches 21 or more points.

Can you Host Your Own Cornhole Tournament?

In short, yes! In long… Hell Yeah! The American Cornhole Organization (ACO) was founded in 2005. You can become an ACO Certified Official for free! Host tournaments and other activities! It might just be a great side hustle for you.
