How Many People Are Working in Yakima? It’s Record Setting
Yakima City officials say they're proud of a record low unemployment number in September.
The record low number means thousands are working in Yakima
The rate was 3.9% in September making it a record low for the city, according to State of Washington Employment Security Department numbers dating back to 1990.
“Continued job growth in the city of Yakima is a positive sign for our local economy,” said Communications & Public Affairs Director Randy Beehler. “The city appreciates the business investment in this community.”
The number beat previous low numbers from three different years
The record low 3.9% broke records set in three different years. A news release from the city says the "previous record low, according to figures dating back to 1990, was 4.4 percent. That jobless rate was reported in October 2019, September 2018 and September 2017."
“The latest unemployment numbers continue a recovery from 2020, which saw significant jobless increases due to the pandemic,” said Beehler. “For example, the city’s unemployment rate was 7.6 percent in September 2020.”
More good news for year-end job numbers
More good news says Beehler could be on the way. Along with the record low unemployment number in September the city has a chance of recording the lowest ever year-end jobless rate. Beehler says "currently, the city’s average monthly unemployment rate is 5.9 percent for 2021. The record low is 5.7 percent, set in 2018."
