800 fire personal are battling the Mile Marker 28 Fire on the Yakama Indian Reservation, 15 miles northeast of Goldendale. The fire that started Wednesday has now burned over 4,600 acres along highway 97, closing the highway from Toppenish to Goldendale. Fire conditions today are described as extreme, with the weather service issuing a red flag warning for fire danger in most of Eastern and Central Washington. the fire is only 3 percent contained.  Some 30 residents have been evacuated due to the fire danger, other
evacuations may be coming.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and remains under investigation by the Yakama Indian Nation.

A Red Cross Shelter has been set up at Our Fathers House Fellowship in Goldendale. Fire officials are monitoring the situation and will open the highway as soon as it's safe.
