The elusive potential big money payoff keeps me feeling like "a fool soon parted with their money" every time I buy a scratch or Powerball ticket. I've seen the proof with my own eyes, however, and for lots of people, buying a lottery ticket can literally pay off in the end.

Judging by a look at the latest winners so far this month, your best chance to win big money is to buy scratch tickets priced $10 or higher or win on Hit5 or Match 4.

What to Do the Second You Get a Winning Ticket

If you win on a lottery ticket, make sure you sign the back of it right away so that no one else can claim your winnings.

If you win more than $600, you must go to one of the Washington Lottery offices to claim your prize in person.

The 180-Day Rule and a Hard-Learned Lesson

Keep in mind that you only have up to 180 days to claim your lottery prize. I would hate for you to find out the hard way like I did that you can't hang on to your tickets to cash in later than six months down the road.
