Driver Dies in Crash After High-Speed Chase On I-82

Washington State Patrol troopers say a woman is dead after crashing into a truck at State Route 24 and Birchfield Road early Sunday. Troopers say they spotted 39-year-old Joyce Elwell of Yakima speeding while driving along Interstate 82.

Police chased Elwell after determining her speed was exceeding 100 mph. Authorities say they chased Elwell until Terrace Heights Way. Shortly after that, they say, she crashed into a truck at State Route 24 and Birchfield Road. Elwell died. The other driver, 40-year-old Carlos Gutierrez, was injured after being ejected. He was transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation continues today.
