After a Tuesday study session, Yakima County commissioners are closer to making a decision on whether to allow recreational sales and production of marijuana.

The session focused on a Planning Commission recommendation to permit the recreational sales of pot.

County Commissioner Mike Leita says before any final decision is made, the board will hold a public hearing.

We will have a final public hearing towards the end of May, and upon conclusion of that hearing we will deliberate and make a final finding.

Leita suspects the board is leaning toward banning the sale and production of recreational marijuana and allowing medical marijuana dispensaries in the county to continue to operate.

No date has yet been set for the public hearing.

A moratorium on recreational pot sales and production remains in place in the county until July. Leita says commissioners will make a final decision before the moratorium ends.
