There is an old joke that says “A person has to believe in something…so I believe I’ll have another drink!”  What we believe drives what we do. The closer we get to the Presidential election, the closer people will be looking at the beliefs of the Mormon religion.  It’s already started. Should a candidates religious beliefs be a factor?  In part it seems it matters because of what so many of us DO believe.

According to a Harris Poll 61% of all U.S. adults believe there is a hell and about the same amount believe there is a devil living in it.  In fact, many more people believe in hell, the devil, miracles and angels than in Darwin's theory of evolution. So what is it that we believe? Our strongest beliefs are:

:

  • God: 82%
  • Miracles: 76%
  • Heaven: 75%
  • Jesus is God or the Son of God: 73%
  • Angels: 72%
  • Survival of the soul after death: 71%
  • Resurrection of Jesus: 70%
  • The virgin birth (Jesus born of Mary): 61%
  • Hell: 61%
  • The devil: 60%

Some of us also believe in these:

  • Darwin's theory of evolution: 45%
  • Ghosts: 42%
  • Creationism: 40%
  • UFOs: 32%
  • Astrology: 26%
  • Witches: 23%
  • Reincarnation: 20%
