The city of Yakima is working with the Yakima YMCA to create an aquatic center and new YMCA facility that would serve the needs of the entire community. YMCA Executive Director Bob Romero says the aquatic facility would include a lazy river, lap pool and warm water therapy pool coupled with a new YMCA facility. The new YMCA "would feature a youth drop in outreach center to serve kids in the neighborhood and fitness equipment and the things we would need to provide people in the community for healthy living." The city partner with the YMCA to fund the aquatic center...the new YMCA would be funded separately by the Y itself. But Romero says such a partnership could help create the kind of pool and YMCA facility the growing city needs in the future. Various locations are being considered including Chesterly Park on 40th Avenue.
If a new YMCA is built officials say they would still keep the downtown YMCA open to serves needs of those in the downtown area.
