A 31-year-old man was seriously injured in a shooting Thursday afternoon in the Safeway parking lot on 5th Avenue. Yakima Police say the incident started as an argument about a cell phone. The suspect drew a handgun during the conversation and shot the victim twice. The victim was rushed to a Yakima hospital, where he remains today.

During the confrontation an armed witness intervened, pulling a gun and demanding the suspect drop his. The suspect then fled the parking lot. Police are still currently searching for the man.

They are looking for a man in his early to mid 20's, possibly from the lower valley. He is described as 5' 11' with short hair, wearing a green shirt and blue pants. Police say he took off in a blue or gray Chevy Impala. It is not clear if the shooting was gang-related. Investigators say the victim suffered life-threatening injuries. He was alert and conscious on his way to the hospital. The investigation continues and the police say the private citizen who intervened had a valid concealed weapons permit to carry his gun.
