If you are a legal gun owner the Yakima Police Department is urging you to store and secure your guns. Authorities say over the last six months officers have investigated more than 50 incidents in which some 70 firearms were stolen during burglaries, car prowls and other thefts.

The department says that's a lot of stolen guns and they're concerned. As a result the department is urging everyone to be careful and deliberate when storing guns.

Officers say the guns that are stolen are usually traded for drugs, sold on the street and or are used in a variety of crimes including homicide.

Police say if you're not carrying your gun don't just leave it on a counter top or other accessible areas. They say secure the firearm in a lock box or a safe.
