If you follow some of the social media posts about Yakima, you would swear that all you would find here is buzzards circling over a stinky, smoking pit. I'd like to pose the question: What is Yakima good at?

Let's see. Depending who you read on social media, Yakima is either the fattest, unsafest, poorest, most racist, most corrupt, most crime-ridden city on the face of the Earth. It also amazes me that most of these comments come not from outside observers, but from people who live here.

I've said this before, but I believe that despite earnest efforts by a lot of well-meaning, intelligent people, Yakima suffers from the worst civic inferiority complex in these United States. Getting at the cause of this problem is another post for another day.

Here's the question. What is Yakima good at? What are the excellent things about our community?

I think that one of these things is our willingness to help out our friends and neighbors in the face of emergency. We rally together when tragedy strikes. We may not have deep pockets, but we still reach into them to give to charity without a second thought. Ask the people at the Memorial Foundation or Children's Village. They'll tell you.

We support our schools. We love youth sports. We love a good burger. We welcome visitors.

What do you think? What are the good things about Yakima? Leave us your thoughts.
