Our recent trip back from some vacation time in North Idaho included getting caught in a huge dust storm on the return trip. I was lucky enough to catch some of it on video.

My family and I were headed back to the Yakima Valley after a trip to the Coeur D'Alene, Idaho area last week. We visited Silverwood Theme Park and spent a couple of days with friends on Lake Coeur D'Alene. We hit the road on Aug. 12 for the return drive and looked forward to being home. A couple of miles east of Ritzville we noticed huge clouds of dust rolling up from the south at a rapid pace. It looked like domething out of a biblical movie. I had hoped that we would be able to make it to Ritzville to pull off of the freeway and wait out the storm in safety.

We didn't quite make it. These videos from my personal Facebook page describe our experience.

We were fortunate that didn't have an accident. After the dust we encountered heavy wind and rain, and saw the pile up that we didn't want to be involved in about 22 miles west of Ritzville in the Eastbound lanes of I-90. It involved 9 vehicles.

Also, the official name for the type of dust storm we got caught in is an "haboob". They are common in the Southwest U.S., but don't happen often in Washington. The photo that accompanies this article is of a storm that happened in Phoenix, Arizona, but the storm we experienced looked just like it.
