In return, the Seahawks receive defensive lineman Brian Sanford from the Browns.

Moffitt was the 75th pick overall in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Seahawks and started the first nine games that season before getting a season-ending knee injury. He played in eight games last season, starting six.

The development of last year's seventh round pick J.R. Sweezy made Moffitt expendable in Seattle, but injuries to the Browns' offensive line will allow Moffitt to compete for a starting job.

Seahawks Insider Clare Farnsworth wrote Monday at seahawks.com:

The Browns view Moffitt as upgrade to the depth on their offensive line.

“We continue to look each day of the year for any opportunity to improve our roster,” CEO Joe Banner told Browns.com. “We’re committed to building a team that can consistently compete in this league.”

Added Brown’s coach Rob Chudzinski, “John’s a tough and versatile lineman who will be in the mix for us up front.”

The Seahawks travel to Green bay to take on the Packers this Friday in their third preseason game. The broadcast starts at 3 p.m. on Newstalk KIT.
