f you've worked hard to get in shape don’t undo all that hard work with too long of a break. A new study finally reveals why it’s so hard to get it back-- muscle memory is gone after as little as two months without exercise.

Study authors found after participants stopped exercising for nine months genetic changes caused by exercise could no longer be detected.

When some of the participants began exercising again after taking the break, researchers found their muscles appeared virtually the same as a newly-trained muscle would-- meaning there was no substantial amount of muscle memory retained. No rest for the weary made weary by pumping iron!  (Time)
