They are called drug recognition experts and they are expected to see more work with the State's new law legalizing marijuana for adults 21 and over. Yakima Police Capt. Rod Light says officers within the department have been trained to recognize signs of impairment.  Light says officers have a new challenges with the new law. So Light says an officer must make the judgement call and that is where the specially trained drug officers will help. Light says they will help regular officers determine if a blood draw is needed to make a determination of impairment. Light says along with the Yakima Police Department, the drug recognition experts are also employed by the Washington State Patrol.
