• The House of Representative’s passed the Waters of the United States Regulatory Overreach Protection Act of 2014 Tuesday afternoon.

Passage is largely an attempt to halt the EPA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ proposed Waters of the U.S. rule. Senate action is unlikely however before the end of the year, or at all.

Still, passage was applauded by groups such as the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and the National Pork Producers Council.

  • The Wanapum Dam repairs are proceeding in Washington State.

Recent low water levels revealed a crack in the dam and the Grant Country PUD has been scrambling to affect repairs in order to raise the water level again. Contractors have installed the first of 35 steel anchor tendons on the spillway. The tendons begin at the top of the spillway and end deep into the bedrock below the dam.

Work is also underway to install over 50 steel anchor bars to repair the one fractured spillway structure. These repairs and the subsequent increase in river elevation, will allow the utility to restore public access to the shoreline, increase electric generation, improve public safety concerns and protect culturally-sensitive sites.
