Even though we officially have about three weeks of summer left, Labor Day is here and for must folks, summer is over. It always bums me out just a little.

I've had a full time job for over 36 years now, and for years in the radio business, holidays didn't mean much. You usually had to work. With the advent of computers in the 1990s, most radio people in our area actually get holidays off.

Labor Day is not one of the holidays I look forward to.

Don't get me wrong, a three day weekend is great. A lot of people will be trying to cram a summer's worth of activities into 72 hours with one last camping trip, hitting the road to visit friends and relatives, or do some things around the house that have been put off for summertime fun. Also, there are a ton of great activities to take in around the Yakima Valley.

Of course, Labor Day also coincides with the start of school. I haven't been in a classroom in years, but this time of year makes me a little wistful. Back to school means that the days will be getting shorter and colder.

Summer's gone.

I do look forward to fall here in the valley. We have some of our best weather in September and October. Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas will be here soon. I guess the end of summer still resonates with me as that loss of freedom we felt when we had to go back to school.

I hope that you have a great Labor Day weekend. I just remembered that I have to work part of Monday.

Bummer.
