Nearly 170 immigrants will be sworn in as U.S. citizens this Friday as one of the events at the annual 4th of July celebration at State Fair Park.

In addition to the music, food, and fireworks, this year’s celebration will also include a naturalization ceremony at 2:00 p.m.

Here’s what the event’s official website has to say about it.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), an agency in the Department of Homeland Security, is hosting the first naturalization ceremony at the State Fair Park in Yakima, Washington. During the ceremony, the oath of allegiance to the United States will be administered to approximately 170 immigrants from numerous countries.

The ceremony is a culmination of many years of dedication, hard work, and study on each applicant’s part to qualify for U.S. citizenship. The requirements to become a U.S. citizen are rigorous and include being a lawful permanent resident, the ability to speak, read, and write English; and passing a 100-question civics and history examination.

Please join us in celebrating this event. Our guest speaker is Sid Morrison, former member of the United States House of Representatives. The oath of allegiance will be administered by Keith Brown, Field Office Director, USCIS, Yakima.

Yakima mayor and 4th of July committee member Micah Cawley told us more about this Friday’s festivities.
