Today marks an historic day for the YMCA. The first YMCA was opened on this date in 1851 in Boston MA. The Yakima YMCA Executive Director Bob Romero says the Yakima's first YMCA was built in 1907. "The current building we're in is only the second building the Y has had in it's 110 years of existence. " Romero says they've been at the current facility on North Naches since 1957. He says about 7,500 kids are served at the facilty every year. But the YMCA also has the Jewitt Childcare Center on 3rd Street and Camp Dudley near Clear Lake on White Pass. And he says they're now working with the city of Yakima to build a joint aquatic center and new YMCA at Chesterly Park on 40th Avenue. He says they hope to have the facility open in the spring of 2019.
