Yakima YWCA Hosts Empowerment Gala to Combat Domestic Violence
Domestic violence remains a pressing issue in Yakima, prompting the local police department to establish a dedicated Domestic Violence Coordinated Community Response Team. Officers often spend a significant portion of their shifts responding to domestic violence incidents, underlining the severity of the problem in the community.
YAKIMA AND SPOKANE LEAD THE STATE IN DOMESTIC INCIDENTS
Cheri Kilty, Executive Director of the YWCA women’s shelter, emphasizes the gravity of the situation, noting that Yakima and Spokane boast the highest rates of domestic violence incidents in Washington state. The YWCA assists thousands of women and children each year, highlighting the ongoing need for support and resources.
YOU CAN HELP THE YWCA HELP EACH OTHER
To further combat this crisis, the YWCA is hosting the Yakima Empowerment Gala Fundraiser on March 21 at the Yakima Convention Center. The event aims to raise funds for domestic violence victims and raise awareness in the community.
Keynote speaker Katrina Cooke-Brownlee, a domestic violence survivor and former NYPD detective, will share her powerful story.
SHE SURVIVED A NEAR FATAL SHOOTING
At just 22, Brownlee was shot ten times by her ex-fiancé, also in law enforcement, leaving her paralyzed. After extensive recovery, she served 24 years with the NYPD, retiring as a top-ranking detective. Today, she leads Young Ladies of Our Future, a nonprofit focused on empowering at-risk young women.
Those interested in supporting the cause can purchase tickets and find more information by visiting ywcayakima.org. The gala presents an opportunity for community members to join forces to address domestic violence and empower survivors in Yakima.
