Yakima to Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.

Today (Monday) is a national holiday to recognize the birthday and civil accomplishments of the late civil rights Leader Martin Luther King Jr.
In Yakima, the 34th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Peace March begins at noon at South Fifth Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. From there, it will proceed east on Eighth Street. Participants will then head south on Eighth Street to the Yakima Convention Center, 10 N. Eighth St.
Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard will be closed from North Fifthh Avenue to North Eighth Street for the march. In addition, Eighth Street will be closed from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Yakima Avenue.

Many of the city of Yakima’s facilities will be closed for day. The closures include  City Hall, Y-PAC, Public Works, and Parks and Recreation offices.

Business offices for the police and fire departments will be closed, but emergency services will remain available.

Yakima Transit will not provide bus service Monday and the city’s Harman Center will be closed.

City of Yakima garbage pickup service will continue as scheduled Monday, but the Refuse Division’s office will be closed.

Lions Pool will remain open to the public.
