Yakima Police Warn Drivers to Avoid South 1st Street Due to Fire
The Yakima Police Department is urging drivers to avoid the area around the 2000 block of South 1st Street as firefighters from the Yakima Fire Department tackle a significant structure fire at a tire storage facility early this morning. Emergency services received reports of the blaze around dawn, prompting a swift response from firefighters who are currently battling the flames.
TRAFFIC IS BLOCKED IN THE AREA
As of now, traffic is blocked on South 1st Street in both directions, with detours in place from Washington Avenue to the north and Mead Avenue to the south. Commuters are urged to seek alternate routes to bypass the affected area.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported thus far, but the situation remains dynamic. Fire officials note that large structure fires can keep firefighting teams occupied for many hours as they work diligently to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures. The fire is situated close to the Les Schwab tire store on South 1st Street.
NO WORD ON HOW THE FIRE STARTED
Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire, and a thorough assessment will be conducted once the flames are brought under control.
In light of the ongoing fire, the Yakima Fire Department also took the opportunity to remind residents to exercise extra caution with fire safety, particularly as the holiday season approaches.
BE CAREFUL THIS HOLIDAY SEASON WITH YOUR COOKING
Officials advise residents to be vigilant when cooking, especially when frying foods. Cooking fires remain the leading cause of residential blazes in the Yakima Valley, and the fire department urges the community to prioritize safety during this festive period.
For the latest updates on the status of the fire and traffic advisories, residents are encouraged to follow local news outlets and the Yakima Fire Department’s official social media channels.
