Yakima Is #1 For a Fiery Reason
If you live in Yakima you live in an area considered to be at a high risk for a home fire. Officials at the American Red Cross say because of the frequency of home fires in the last week and historically Yakima the distinction of having the highest rate of home fires in all of Washington State. In fact the American Red Cross helped 23 people affected by four home fires in Yakima County within the last week. Three of those fires happened in Yakima City, the fourth in Union Gap.
YAKIMA SADLY HAS EARNED A NEW TITLE
As a result the Northwest Region of the American Red Cross has named Yakima the Home Fire Campaign signature city. Later this year the Red Cross officials will visit Yakima to save lives.
“Our hearts go out to our neighbors who are impacted by home fires,” says Michele Roth, Central and Southeastern Washington Chapter Executive Director. “It takes all of us to make our community safer. We hope the community will join us as partners and volunteers this April to Sound the Alarm about the threat of home fires.”
MORE LIVES WILL BE SAVED DURING AN EVENT IN APRIL IN YAKIMA
Roth says they'll hold an event in Yakima this April called Sound the Alarm to install free smoke alarms in high-risk homes and develop home fire safety and prevention plans for residents.
MORE THAN 1500 LIVES HAVE BEEN SAVED SINCE 2014
Red Cross officials say since launching in October 2014, the campaign has "saved at least 1,583 lives nationwide - including 9 people in Washington state - from the threat of home fires, which claim seven lives every day in the U.S. Red cross officials say most often, the tragedies happen in homes without working smoke alarms."
