19 jobs are expected to be cut in Yakima as a result of the US Postal Service consolidating 8 mail processing centers into two in Seattle and Spokane. The announcement was made earlier today that the Postal Service is transferring it's operations in Yakima, Wenatchee and Pasco to Spokane. Other operations in Everett, Olympia and Tacoma are being switched to Seattle. A total of 3 hundred jobs will be cut. But spokesman Earnie Swanson says they're hoping to make the cuts through attrition and not layoffs. Employees who's jobs are cut have the option of requesting a transfer or moving into a job such as a letter carrier if there are openings. The reason for the consolidation? A drop in mail volume.
