The proposed downtown Yakima plaza survived a vote that would've killed the idea during Tuesday's Yakima City Council meeting.

Council Member Bill Lover motioned to cancel the project, but the vote was defeated 4-3. His motion was supported by Dulce Gutierrez and Holly Cousens, but opposed by Mayor Avina Gutierrez, Kathy Coffey, Carmen Mendez and Maureen Adkison.

No date has been set but City Council members agreed to hold a study session on the issue in the near future. At that meeting the city could vote on the future of the project.

The plaza seemed to be well on its way to getting underway before November's elections resulted in four new faces being added to the council, placing the project's future in question.
