The Yakima City Council continues to plan for a proposed homeless shelter near the Greenway Pathway. The council on Monday was given a report from an Ad Hoc committee on the proposed homeless shelter on 2.6 acres of property specifically near State Route 24 and South 22nd Street near the Greenway pathway. The council appointed 6 people to the committee in March of this year to research the proposal and create a report for the council. The shelter is proposed for 2.6 acres of property specifically near State Route 24 and South 22nd Street. The six page report concluded that the site has limitations. The report also says the facility should be more than a low barrier shelter and should include some transitional housing and some support services with outreach or case management.
The Greenway has filed a lawsuit to stop the proposal from going forward. The council Monday decided to hold a future study session to further investigate the proposal. But no date was set for the session.
