The city of Yakima has a new Mayor, Matt Brown, who previously served as Deputy Mayor. Brown was elected during a city council vote on Tuesday at Yakima City Hall, winning 5-2. Reedy Berg has been appointed as the new Deputy Mayor. In an interview with KIT News, Brown explained that the council’s decision to change leadership was driven by a desire for fresh perspectives and "wanted a change."

LOOKING FOR LONG TERM SOLUTIONS

Brown emphasized his commitment to increasing community engagement, saying his goal is to have more council members out in the community to create better connections between city leaders and residents.
The Yakima City Council also approved a temporary measure to keep Yakima Fire Department Station 92 open until August while exploring long-term options for its permanent operation.

CLOSING THE STATION COULD IMPACT DEVELOPMENT

Brown says he's concerned that closing the station in the west part of the city could hinder growth, pointing to increased response times as a potential issue. Currently, around $2 million from city savings across various departments is being allocated to maintain the station.

LOOKING FOR SOLUTIONS

Council Member Reedy Berg asked staff to return with details on a permanent solution for EMS services, including a proposed levy lift.
The council is slated to continue discussions on the operation of Yakima Valley Trolleys on January 20 and will revisit funding for the Yakima Fire Department on February 3.

LIONS POOL STILL SLATED FOR CLOSURE IN FEBRUARY

The council also decided to hold off on any major decisions regarding Lions Pool, which will remain open at least until the end of February. Talks with area school districts about the pool's future are ongoing.
